The Balm of Gilead in scripture speaks of REPENTANCE and following the WAY of the GREAT PHYSICIAN, MESSIAH JESUS!
We first see this balm appear in Genesis 37 above, then two more times, first in Jeremiah 8:22, Is there no balm in Gilead, Is there no physician there? Why then is there no recovery for the health of the daughter of my people?”
Where Jeremiah uses the known medicine as a metaphor for spiritual healing through repentance for Israel. Then again in Jeremiah 46:11 where he says, “Go up to Gilead and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt; In vain you will use many medicines; You shall not be cured.”
Meaning, they could travel to find the best medicine but until they repented and sought the Lord for redemption from their sins, they would find no healing. The same is true today. Just look at America and you will find that most are sick and diseased in their sins, running to physicians for prescription pharma-but never being able to heal.
Most people grow old going from one pain, ailment, condition, surgery, or drug to the next, and so it goes until they die. This should NOT BE SO for people of YHWH because we have YESHUA, and by His stripes we are HEALED as we partake in His cross through REPENTANCE unto LIFE. The Balm of Gilead given by the King of Kings!
The word GILEAD in Pictorial Hebrew means: "Lift up His authority and teaching so that their eyes can see and understand the path." In other words, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Mark 16:15

Does this mean we shouldn't use or don't need any medicine? I don't believe so, we see many examples of natural medicine being used in scripture, even in the New Testament! God-given plants, food, fermentation, balms, oils, sunshine, and more are all gifts from our Creator that we should never take for granted. But we use them while seeking the spiritual roots for FULL HEALING in Jesus, with repentance. And THIS is why I love anointing oil SO MUCH. Because they are a prophetic act of FAITH that says, "I set myself apart for YOU, search me and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts, see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting." (Psalm 139: 23-24)
