Can a Christian Have a Demon?
Did you know that a Christian can 'have' a demon? I know, I know, no one likes to think about that. Just bear with me and for starters remove the word 'possession' from your vocabulary, it is not even in the bible (*That is, in the original language. See below for more on that!) Erase visions of every horror movie you have watched out of your head and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you in Truth by His word.
Blaine Cook once told me, "I don't care if they are in me, on me or around me-I want them GONE." That is perfect theology. Do you really want to sit around debating whether or not demons are allowed to come in? Isn't it enough to make you want to get rid of them just knowing they are near?
Christians somehow believe that we are untouchable to demons, yet we are the ones they are after! Just look at how many Christians you know that are sick, depressed, angry, fearful, lost, hopeless, or in financial dire straits, then rethink the question, "Can Christians have demons?" The answer is YES.
The Bad News So how are they allowed to 'occupy' our lives? They attach themselves to wounds of our past and lies we believe (about us or about God). On top of that the sins we commit open doors and give legal right for them to come and oppress us. That's the bad news.
The Good News The good news is that if you are a true disciple of Jesus and you continue in His word then you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free. (John 8:32) Part of that truth is that YES, Christians can have demons. Once you realize that is true, then you can work on healing the wounds with the TRUTH, replacing the lies with the TRUTH, and turning from sin to fully follow the TRUTH (Jesus)...and you will be FREE and able to lead others to that same FREEDOM!
Start on your freedom journey today by asking God to show you what lies you are believing, what wounds He wants to heal, and what sins you need to turn away from once and for all. THEN LISTEN WHEN HE TELLS YOU and do whatever it takes to follow through and press into Him until the job is finished, sometimes it's all in a matter of a couple hours, sometimes it may take longer, but freedom WILL come if you do not give up. Jesus is right there waiting to walk you through it to fullness. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free! (Galatians 5:1)
*The Greek word that is translated "possessed" in Matthew 4:24 is daimonÃzomai- (from 1142 /daÃmon) – properly, demonized, i.e. coming under the power of a demon. (A demon is a fallen angel or quite possibly the disembodied spirit of a Nephilim-but that is a post for another day. I honestly don't think it matters if we know exactly what a demon is other than it is 'spirit' and it is evil).
In contrast, Webster defines possession as ' something that is owned or possessed by someone'...
The demons do not OWN people. People accept and carry them with them, but the demons never own a person. That is precisely why a Christian can 'have' a demon even thought they are OWNED by FATHER GOD in Heaven. God does not cease ownership of a saved person just because they have a demon.
"Possessed" is how the English translated daimonizomai, however, the word possessed seems to imply COMPLETE control which is not the case at all with demons. Humans have a choice, like when the Garadene demoniac came to worship Jesus even though he had a legion of demons inside. HE had demons, but the demons did not possess or own HIM. <3 To learn more check out the Deliverance chapter in the Freedom Fighters book!
